Hi Toni – well, it’s always fun to speculate about stuff like this. A critic’s job, after all, is to multiply meanings within a text.
It’s just that I always viewed Daniel Day Lewis’ performance in There Will Be Blood as a Brobdingnagian exercise in over-acting, left over from his sturm und drang performance in Gangs of New York, in the service of a script that spent two and a half hours looking for itself and finally defaulted to a clip art climax. I prefer a scoop of Cherry Garcia in a tall cold glass of Framboise Lambic to that particular milkshake. If you buy into all that, well, I guess you could stumble across the epilogue to Blood Meridian about as easily as any other cryptic passage and just plug it into one more receptor that the director and scriptwriter of the film left open in the hope of forcing any concrete direction upon it.
