Clearly DEAD MAN is dearly influenced by BLOOD MERIDIAN OR THE EVENING REDNESS IN THE WEST.
Or else not… but appearing to be… lots… more in its atmosphere than in its incident or characters… as if JJ had read the novel before embarking on that particular show… for which Neil Young sat in a studio with the film playing twice and JJ used whatever Young recorded… which, if you listen to it closely, is an improv around “Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child,” but played so slowly and moodily that it’s almost unrecognizable until you’ve identified it…
Apparently Our Lord Weinstein did not wish to promote DEAD MAN and did his best to bury it, another example of how this man who we never don’t hear “loves” film shows his deep love for whatever might injure the profit margin of that year.
